He is a senior dam and earthquake expert at Poyry Energy Ltd. in Zurich, Switzerland, where he has been involved in the seismic safety evaluation of some of the world’s largest dams and other infrastructure projects. He has worked on the safety evaluation of the following large arch dams: Mauvoisin (250 m high; Switzerland), Deriner (250 m high; Turkey), Dez (203 m), Karun I (200 m) and Ghir (135 m high; Iran) and he was a member of the team, which evaluated the safety of the 106 m high Sefid Rud buttress dam following the June 21, 1990 Manjil earthquake. He was also the seismic expert for the proposed 288 m high Dibang gravity dam in the Northeast of India.

He was also the team leader of the joint CHINCOLD-ICOLD team inspecting dams damaged by the May 12, 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan province, China. Some 2666 dams have been affected by this earthquake. From 1980 to 1990, he was a faculty member and division chairman at the Asian Institute of Technology (graduate school) in Bangkok, Thailand.

He obtained his MSc and PhD in civil engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland in 1971 and 1978, respectively.
