Geomagnetismo britânico

O Observatório Nacional recebe nesta quarta-feira, 18 de agosto, o Dr. Ciaran Beggan, membro da British Geological Survey, Reino Unido. Beggan ministrará a palestra "Visão Geral do Geomagnetismo no British Geological Survey (BGS)". O evento está previsto para começar às 15h30 no Auditório do Observatório Nacional, que fica na Rua Gal. José Cristino, 77 - S. Cristovão (Rio de Janeiro).

Título: "An Overview of Geomagnetism at the British Geological Survey (BGS)"

Conferencista: Ciaran Beggan - British Geological Survey, Edinburgh, United Kingdom.

Resumo:

The establishment of a permanent magnetic observatory in Greenwich, London in 1847 marked the start of long-term continuous monitoring of the Earth's magnetic field in the UK. Today, over 160 years later, the Geomagnetism team of the BGS employs more than twenty people and operates seven INTERMAGNET-standard magnetic observatories, three on mainland UK and four overseas, and the UK network of repeat stations. The observatories are remotely operated and deliver near real-time data back to the office in Edinburgh. Our primary responsibilities are to measure, record, quality-check, maintain and archive magnetic field data and to undertake research into Geomagnetism. We provide local and global magnetic field data for map-makers, industry, military and civilian users. Through collaboration with our colleagues around the world, we help produce the widely used magnetic activity indices Kp, ap and aa, the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) and the World Magnetic Model (WMM) global magnetic models every five years. Additionally, we produce and deliver the BGS Global Geomagnetic Model (BGGM), updated once per year, to licensed industry users. We provide global and local magnetic field data to the public via our website (www.geomag.bgs.ac.uk).

We are also involved in many other research activities including improved global magnetic field modelling and secular variation forecasting methods, analysis of crustal field variations, investigation of geomagnetic storm hazards to electrical power networks and examination of the effects of extreme magnetic variations on technology. We are currently digitising our archived magnetogram records from 1851 onwards to make available to the public. We also host a World Data Centre for Geomagnetism. In addition, we refurbish and supply magnetometers and recording equipment to developing nations through the INDIGO programme.
The talk will give an overview on how we run and maintain our observatories, our data products and services. I will also discuss some of our recent research activities, including improving the forecast of magnetic field change in the absence of vector magnetic satellite data.
